Restoring an Old, Sagging Mattress

Most of us refuse to part with our favorite beds. We've just become so used to them even though they may already smell or droop a bit. Well, a smelly bed can be a health concern, especially if what you're noticing is a musty, moldy odor. Be sure to clean the bed immediately or send it to professionals who can exterminate and fumigate it because mold on or in the mattress can cause lots of health problems, like asthma and other respiratory and skin conditions.

As for sagging beds, there are several ways to reinforce them. Some of you might think, "Do I really have to do something? I feel comfortable in it, and a floppy bed isn't a problem for me." You might believe that this is not an issue. But be aware that sleeping on a sagging bed will cause back or spinal problems. So, if you've noticed that your back hurts more than usual, maybe it's time to take a look at your bed and see if it's began drooping.

Prevent Sagging

As they say, "prevention is better than cure." So, it's better to prevent the sagging before it begins. How? One thing that you can do is to regularly rotate or turn your bed. Don't just turn it upside down. Be sure to alternate the head and foot part as well. Do this every few months or so.

Reinforce with Platform

In case you notice that your bed's platform is already bent or if some parts are broken, make sure that you fix the problem immediately. Put a new platform under the mattress for more support. If you are using metal frames, check if the bed sags when there's extra weight. This means you need to install a few more braces.
If you are using an organic mattress, avoid using plywood. This won't allow the bed to breathe. Instead, use slatted platforms or you can also put holes in the plywood to encourage ventilation.

Use a Mattress Topper

Usually, you'll first notice the sagging at the center of the mattress. To make the bed's surface more level, use mattress toppers. There are all sorts of toppers available, such as those filled with memory foam, wool, or latex foam. Some are also filled with feathers and down, and others have synthetic foams. Thicker toppers are normally more costly, and these are better options because they will make your mattress more flat.

In addition to mattress toppers, you can also make use of thick blankets. In case you have some extra lying around, just fold these properly based on the size of the sagging portion and place over the slumped part. Then, cover with bedding. But take note that you will have to adjust the blankets every now and then because they get displaced easily.

Replace Box Spring

Does your mattress have box springs? If so, check if worn out springs are causing the problem. You can replace them, which is a cheaper option compared with buying a brand new mattress.
