Over the years I have become more and more interested in home remedies for all different things- for example, once upon a time I would use bleach to clean my tiled floors- then I found out how utterly unhealthy that is and after some research discovered that vinegar is a wonderful substitute- just as cheap, surprisingly doesn’t leave a smell and much, much safer. Once you start reading up a bit more you realize how much we are victims of the "buy, buy, buy" culture that we are fed day in, day out. My home remedies are my way of sticking my tongue at all those who tell me that I "must" buy x or that my life will be incomplete without y.
I love home remedies. I love cleaning my floor tiles with vinegar instead of expensive cleaning products and my oven with good old washing up liquid instead of the scarily toxic oven cleaners (just think about them being cooked into your food!). I love being more aware of the buy, buy, buy culture that surrounds us and learning to survive without buying expensive products that we are made to feel we "must" invest in. Recently I've been looking into home remedies for my gold jewelry.
Now obviously your gold jewelry is hardly on the level of your floors- I think we would probably be a little more concerned if we damage our gold jewelry than if we damaged our floors so it is obviously a subject that cannot be taken light-heartedly. Having said that, I firmly believe that these remedies can be just as good as expensive jewelry cleaners out there and we are just used to having to spend way too much money on a process that can be done for much cheaper using products found in your home. So here we go…
It’s our favorite- the good old washing-up liquid!
I love washing-up liquid- it's just so darn wonderful at cleaning so many things- dishes, tiles, the floors, the oven. And then I found out that you can even use it to clean your gold jewelry-how fabulous! Here are steps…
Put a few drops of washing-up liquid in a bowl of warm water and mix gently. Apparently for even better results you should try sodium-free seltzer water or club soda in place of regular water because the carbonation loosens dirt.
Soak your gold jewelry in the mixture for fifteen minutes.
Scrub each piece with a soft-bristle toothbrush. So make sure that the toothbrush is soft-bristle because a hard-bristled brush may scratch the surface of the jewelry. There are even special brushes that are designed just for this but something like an eyebrow brush is also an excellent alternative.
Rinse each piece of jewelry under warm, running water.
Blot-dry the jewelry with a soft cloth.
Amazing Ammonia
Using ammonia to clean your gold jewelry is really effective but most only be done sparingly as it can damage the gold is used too often. Mix ammonia with water with a ratio of one part ammonia to six parts water. Soak the jewelry for no more than a minute. It can be useful to have a strainer on hand in order to enable pulling the pieces of jewelry out quickly and together. Rinse the jewelry well under running water. Dry the pieces with a soft polishing cloth.
How to Clean Gold Jewelry with GemstonesGold jewelry with gemstones should never be submerged in water. Instead, wipe the jewelry with a cloth that has been dipped in the washing-up liquid and water mixture that we described above. Then rub the jewelry with a cloth that has been dampened with water. Make sure to lay the jewelry upside down after cleaning so that any remaining moisture won't seep into the setting.
Toothpaste is not just good for cleaning teeth!
This method is best used for the gold pieces that you wear daily. Apply toothpaste to a soft-bristled, old toothbrush and gently scrub off the dirt from the jewelry. If you wish to hand-polish the item, apply the toothpaste to a cloth and polish it. Rinse the jewelry in water.
Simply water
In the case of needing to get oil, grease or wax off your gold jewelry, you should boil the jewelry in water. Make sure the jewelry is submerged in water so that no harm will come to it. Any oil, grease or wax will float to the surface of the water.
