Thanks to some fantastic leaps in technology – and the raging successes of capitalism – there are all sorts of things we can buy instantly at the click of a button. Because of this, designing your home to take advantage of all the space that is available to you has never been more popular, and the bathroom is no exception.
There are a number of ways to maximise the space of your bathroom allowing you to maintain a clean, minimalist and contemporary look without sacrificing luxury. Here are my five tips for saving - and making the most of – the space in your bathroom.
1. Consider a Bath-Shower Combination
A pretty simple solution for smaller bathrooms that could ordinarily only fit either a tub or a shower enclosure is to combine the two and have a bath with a shower attachment. Obviously this depends on the dimensions you have to work with and the pipe layoutsince the bath would generally need to be against a wall. If so, a corner or straight bath would be required rather than a freestanding design.
Despite this limiting your choice of baths somewhat, there are hundreds of great designs out there and a great many shower kits which can be installed around the tub.
2. Corner Baths
If a bath-shower combination isn’t really your bag then there are a range of small baths or corner tubs that could ease your bathroom woes. Corner baths are a little restrictive concerning aesthetics as they are essentially designed with practicality in mind, but there is still a good selection of styles to choose from and a range of different sizes. Corner tubs are usually made out of acrylic since it is a flexible and strong material that retains heat very well.
Depending on the size of the corner bath, they can be more spacious than some cramped straight bath designs, allowing for more freedom to move and stretch your legs.
3. Shower Enclosure Doors
Like the corner baths mentioned above, quadrant shower enclosures also fit snugly into the corner of your bathroom to give greater floor space. The shower trays for the enclosures often come in a rectangular and square shape, or specially shaped with a curved corner for quadrants.
However, the best space-saving technique when it comes to shower enclosures is the range of different doors available. Some quadrant shower enclosures feature doors that open inwards whereas there are also designs with bi fold doors that fold in on themselves. Another alternative to hinged and pivot shower doors are sliding doors which are some of the best designs around when it comes to space conservation and ease of use.
4. Mirror Cabinets
A mirror cabinet is a great way of functionalising wall space while still having that all-important mirror to look at when styling your hair or applying makeup. Having a cabinet to hold toothbrushes and other various products on the wall instead of taking up valuable floor space is a no-brainer. Mirrors are also useful in more confined spaces as they give the illusion of the room being larger than it actually is. This isn’t very much help from a practical point of view, but it certainly adds to the room’s overall feel and atmosphere.
5.Install a Vertical Radiator
Vertical radiators are another practical solution for saving on floor and wall space. More traditional style radiators take up space at floor-level and across the horizontal plane of the wall which can make it difficult to arrange other fittings such as baths, showers and basins. Having a tall and narrow radiator that goes up the wall is a simple yet effective solution, heating the room just as well as any other radiator while making use of the upper portions of the wall which are usually empty. They also come in a variety of attractive, contemporary designs.
