Create an Outdoor Oasis - Garden Design Tips for Lazy Gardeners

An outdoor space is something to savour. It is a place you can go to enjoy some fresh air, soak up a bit of sunshine on a warm summer’s day, relax, and if you are the sociable type, you can use your garden to entertain. Some people treat their garden as a hobby. They enjoy spending their weekends weeding, trimming, planting and experimenting with new gardening techniques. Sadly, not all of us are blessed with the time or inclination to take up gardening, so if you are a lazy gardener, what is the best way to design a low-maintenance garden?
The ultimate low maintenance garden would be one with absolutely nothing in it or, in other words, a patch of gravel or concrete. Of course, this type of garden would not exactly be very attractive, although it would be a useful car parking space, so if you want a garden you can use for relaxing in, you need to come up with a better design.

No Grass = Less Work

Mowing the lawn is one of the most labour intensive tasks in a garden. Depending on the size of your lawn, it could easily take up to two hours to cut the grass. At the peak of the summer growing season, your lawn will need cutting at least once per week, which is a significant time drain. One way to reduce the workload is to getrid of the lawn.
Replace a section of your lawn with a decking area or large patio. This will require a fair amount of work in the short term, but in the long term you can enjoy a low maintenance garden. A patio is great for entertaining, so buy some new patio furniture and organise a summer BBQ. You could plant colourful flowers in pots and containers if you want some visual interest on your patio, or fix some trellis to the wall and plant a fragrant climber instead.

Use Weed Membrane

Weeds are a real nuisance and unless you are willing to spend a lot of time fire fighting, it is very difficult to keep on top of the weed situation. One way of keeping the local weed population down is to use weedmembrane in your flower beds. For best results, start from scratch and lay weed membrane on freshly dug soil. Next, you need to plant your flowers and shrubs through the membrane before covering it with woodchip or stone chippings. The plants will grow, but the weeds won’t, which means a lot less work.

Stone, Gravel and Low Maintenance Plants

Japanese gardens tend to feature lots of gravel and stones with ornamental grasses and low maintenance plants. This type of garden looks fantastic and thanks to a lack of grass or bedding plant, it won’t require much work on your part to keep it looking in tip-top condition.
