Tips on Saving Space in Your Home

Let’s be honest, unless you live in some vast mansion then saving space is always a good thing in your home. We could all do with a little less clutter in our lives, and more open space to think, breathe and relax after a hard day at work. So here are a few ideas to help you save space in your home, and create the de-cluttered dream space that you deserve.

Make the Most of Otherwise Empty Spaces

Around the home there are plenty of empty spaces, and making the most of these spaces can transform your home and stop you feeling so hemmed in. You particularly want to gain that feeling of relaxation and harmony in your bedroom, so it’s the perfect place to start. A really clever idea for your bedroom is a nightstand that mounts on the wall, as the open area underneath will visually enlarge the space and create the illusion of more floor space. Equally, mounting a light on the wall above the nightstand will free up space on it and stop the tabletop becoming so cluttered. Also make sure that nothing is unnecessarily taking up more space than it needs to - an ottoman bed is agreat way to save space, as you’ll have tons of storage without the need for a bulky chest of drawers or extra wardrobe.

Keep Window Coverings Light

Heavy window coverings will darken a room and make it seem smaller, even when the curtains are open. Light gauze or lace curtains will make your room lighter and give the illusion of more space. In a bedroom when you want to block out light to ensure a good night’s sleep, or you just want the option of a little extra cosiness in the evenings, you could try layering the gauzy curtains with a white blackout blind.

Use Scent

Scent is so evocative, and can bring an instant sense of calm to any size room, as well as bringing back happy memories. It's always best to go to a shop and actually sample the scents of candles or room diffusers rather than just reading the descriptions - you really never know how you'll react to different scents, and getting something you don't like is completely the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve! If you've gone for a cosy feel a rich, smoky scent is really fitting - especially if you don't have a fireplace of your own. True Grace make a ‘librarycandle that fits the bill perfectly, it also has notes of amber and moss. For a light and airy room, look for a candle or diffuser with notes of fresh herbs like wild mint or basil and lemon - it will make you feel like you're relaxing in a beautiful garden.
